Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow shared a stage in Gainesville on Sunday, throwing passes, signing jerseys and posing with fans at the Alachua County Sports & Events Center for an event that brought together the entirety of Florida's Heisman Trophy lineage. The gathering, known as the Florida Legends Experience, gave fans the rare chance to meet and interact with all three of the university's Heisman winners in one room, according to event organizers.
The event unfolded on Sunday at the Alachua County Sports & Events Center at Celebration Pointe, as documented in photographs by Orlando Sentinel photographer Stephen M. Dowell. Tebow, wearing his familiar number 15, hugged Spurrier and shared a moment with him during the festivities, while also chatting with event organizer Freddie Wehbe. Wuerffel threw a pass that was hauled in by fan Wendy Gowen, and Spurrier threw one of his own during the interactions with the crowd, per the same photo essay.
Fans lined up throughout the event for a chance at their own moment with the trio. Tebow posed with Gator fan Victoria Peurrung, who also caught a pass from him, and he hugged another fan and did the Gator Chomp with young attendees. He caught a pass thrown by a fan, cheered alongside the crowd, and placed a football on the crown of Miss University of Florida Maralee Thompson, who caught a pass of her own and later got her jersey signed by Spurrier. Tebow also chatted with Ginny Sumrall, wife of new Florida head coach Jon Sumrall, and her son Sam Sumrall, who were on hand for the gathering.
Three Eras, One Trophy Case
The reunion carries weight beyond a single afternoon of autographs. Florida is one of only eight FBS programs to produce at least three Heisman Trophy winners and one of just two programs with three quarterback winners, spanning Spurrier's 1966 win, Wuerffel's in 1996 and Tebow's in 2007, according to NFL.com. Spurrier also holds a distinction unmatched in college football history: he is the only person to win the Heisman as a player and later coach a Heisman winner at his alma mater, guiding Wuerffel to the trophy in 1996 after returning to Gainesville as head coach in 1990, per the Florida Legends Experience. The three have been permanently commemorated together on campus since April 2011, when life-sized bronze statues of the trio were unveiled outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
The event also served as a fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting Isaiah 117 House, a nonprofit that provides temporary, safe shelter and supplies for children awaiting foster care placement. Organizers are aiming to help fund a local facility for the group in Alachua County, according to event details from the Florida Legends Experience. Interactive fan packages ranged from $349 for a pass experience with Wuerffel to $795 for the chance to catch a touchdown from Tebow, with a $1,500 VIP tier offering photos with all three Heisman winners and their trophies.
A Commercial Hub With Financial Strain
The day's festivities were anchored at Celebration Pointe, which has become something of a commercial heart for Gator fandom. The Alachua County Sports & Events Center opened there in June 2023 following a $35 million construction project funded primarily through local tourism tax revenue, per WRUF. An evening gala tied to the weekend was held at Spurrier's Gridiron Grille, also at Celebration Pointe, which opened in August 2021 and houses a memorabilia museum displaying Spurrier's original 1966 Heisman Trophy, according to WUFT News. Freddie Wehbe, Spurrier's longtime business manager, was a key partner in developing both the restaurant and the Florida Legends event series.
Celebration Pointe has not been without complications, however. In June 2025, Alachua County issued a notice of default against the complex's operating entity over more than $500,000 in unpaid special community development district assessments tied to the sports center property, county officials said. The county warned that failure to resolve the assessments covering fiscal years 2024 and 2025 could result in contract termination, though the sports center hosted Sunday's event without apparent disruption.
A Nod to Florida's New Era
The presence of Ginny and Sam Sumrall offered an informal link between the program's storied past and its uncertain present. Jon Sumrall was named the 31st head coach in Florida program history on November 30, 2025, replacing Billy Napier after the Gators went 4-8 in 2025. Sumrall arrived in Gainesville after leading Tulane to an AAC championship and a College Football Playoff berth, compiling a 43-12 career head coaching record along the way, as Hoodline previously reported when he first visited Orlando to meet Gator fans ahead of the season.
For a fan base still adjusting to a coaching change, watching Spurrier, Wuerffel and Tebow trade passes and hugs in one gymnasium offered a reminder of the standard the program has chased for decades. All three Heisman winners' interactions with fans were also displayed alongside autographed footballs, a signed jersey and a baseball card commemorating Tebow, rounding out a day that organizers hope leaves both a charitable and historical mark on Gainesville.
