Due to Florida's wet soil conditions and the natural aging of concrete structures, the county's manholes require maintenance. Sewer gases cause corrosion, and the region's high groundwater levels create a continuous risk of infiltration, affecting not only the manholes but also the overall stability of the wastewater treatment system. According to the County’s Utilities Capital Projects Manager, Chris Cannan, "We’re really ahead of the curve in Florida by consistently inspecting and rehabilitating manholes across the County," St. Johns County reports.
The Utilities Department’s ongoing investment in the Manhole Rehabilitation Program focuses not only on repairs but also on preventive measures.
