St. Louis resident Alantae Garner, 31, has been sentenced to 157 months in prison after a federal judge determined he supplied fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose of a fellow detainee last year. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri, Garner pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a felon. The incident involving the firearm occurred when St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers noticed Garner seated in a stolen car and subsequently found a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun in his possession.
Garner was initially apprehended on a federal charge on July 25, 2024. While he was awaiting his first court appearance, evidence presented during a sentencing hearing showed that he was involved in supplying fentanyl to another detainee who overdosed in the holding cell. Despite the efforts of Deputy U.S. Marshals to save the victim, the individual later died at a hospital. This news follows on the heels of increased efforts to combat violent crime and gun violence across the country, as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
The case against Garner was investigated by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Christian Goeke. Since its strengthening on May 26, 2021, PSN has aimed to foster trust within communities and to support local organizations that prevent violence before it occurs, focusing their efforts on strategic enforcement priorities and measuring their outcomes in an effort to make neighborhoods safer.
The tragic incident highlights the ongoing battle against substance abuse and illegal gun ownership. While Garner's conviction brings a measure of accountability, it also points to the larger issues of drug circulation within the justice system, and the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing such calamities.
