
As St. Louis picks up the pieces from the devastating EF-3 tornado that struck on May 16, Governor Mike Kehoe has stepped in with an announcement that may just be the lifeline residents have been waiting for. According to an official news release from the Governor's Office, additional funding has been approved by FEMA to aid in private property debris clearance in the tornado-ravaged city. Governor Kehoe relayed his appreciation for the federal support, stating, "We appreciate the efforts of President Trump and Secretary Noem to ensure that the State of Missouri and the City of St. Louis have the expedited funding and the resources we need for our recovery efforts."
This expedited disaster assistance aims to speed up St. Louis's recovery by utilizing the combined forces of FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for technical assistance ensuring the debris removal operations are not only swift but safe and accountable, in a bid to get the city back on its feet as soon as possible, thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged, and tens of thousands of city residents' lives were derailed by the natural disaster. Spearheaded by state and city officials, the collaboration will ensure local leaders retain control over the clean-up operations while also benefiting from federal expertise and resources.
The financial aspect of this aid involves FEMA shouldering 75 percent of the eligible costs, and the State of Missouri covering the remaining 25 percent. In a show of solidarity and swift action, the Missouri General Assembly had previously appropriated $100 million during a June special session to support St. Louis's recovery efforts, a session that was called by none other than Governor Kehoe himself.
The road to recovery will require St. Louis residents to stay updated with local guidelines about how to sort and place debris for removal, additional details surrounding the exact logistics of the debris removal will be relayed by local officials as they become available in the city has begun the process of obtaining Rights of Entry from property owners, a step which is crucial before debris can be cleared from private properties.
