In a recent development that has stirred the small coastal community of St. Pete Beach, economic crimes detectives have apprehended a city employee following allegations of fraudulent fuel purchases. According to a release from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the individual involved is Leonard Hardy Rose, a 50-year-old city worker who reportedly made unauthorized use of a municipal gas card over 18 months.
The inquiry into these improper transactions commenced on August 28, when city officials flagged up the suspected misappropriation of funds; detectives piecing together the case stumbled upon surveillance footage placing Rose at the center of numerous fueling sessions involving personal vehicles instead of city-owned ones, Rose, who was caught on camera using the city-issued gas card as a mode of payment and, it is believed the amount pilfered through these deceitful acts has surpassed $3,000 to this date.
Rose's activities had gone unnoticed from February of 2024 up until they were brought to light this year, and on September 4, the Sheriff's Office decided to charge him with Scheme to Defraud—an offense that prompted his immediate arrest and subsequent booking into the Pinellas County Jail. The official report clearly states that the investigation into the full extent of Rose's unlawful endeavors is ongoing, signaling that further details may emerge as more evidence is gathered and reviewed.
