Amid concerns and controversy, State Senator Sonya Halpern of Atlanta has reached out to Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp for transparency following a large-scale U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation at Hyundai's EV and battery facility in Ellabell. The ICE raid resulted in the detention of nearly 500 workers, which included legally present foreign nationals in Georgia on business visas or through the Visa Waiver Program. These individuals were crucial for the installation and oversight of essential equipment.
"The Hyundai-LG battery facility represents the largest industrial project in our state’s history, with 8,500 promised jobs and billions of dollars in investment," Halpern stated. She expressed concern that the disruption might have put both the current and future investments in jeopardy, putting local businesses and communities to potentially face severe consequences. Sonya Halpern has to notably balance the need for lawful immigration enforcement and the preservation of her state’s economic vitality.
In a letter to Governor Kemp, Senator Halpern urged, "Georgians deserve answers." She requested the governor to provide details on three key points: the status of detained workers, support for international companies to navigate federal visa and immigration processes, and reassurances to international investors on Georgia's commitment to remaining a safe and reliable place to do business.
Given South Korea's position as Georgia’s third-largest trading partner, the raid did reportedly not sit well with Korean officials and community leaders, who have depicted the incident as a betrayal of trust. Halpern highlighted, "Partnership also requires accountability," suggesting that any legal violations should be addressed in such a way that both upholds Georgia's integrity and secures its economic future. The state Senator emphasized that Governor Kemp owes "Georgians transparency" on how the administration plans to proceed in ensuring the state retains its reputation as a reliable partner.
