The City of Sterling Heights has revealed plans for a new indoor pickleball facility at the recent City Council meeting. This project leverages a voter-approved millage and includes buying a property at 35630 Van Dyke Avenue near 15 Mile Road for transformation into a top-tier sports complex, as reported by Sterling Heights government announcements.
With a significant $10 million investment destined for property acquisition and construction costs, this center will stand as the first of its kind funded by a municipality in Macomb County, and the second statewide. An additional pickleball court has been added to the original blueprint from the Pathway to Play and Preservation millage, bringing the total to nine courts, alongside six table tennis courts designed for tournament play, shared Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlois. "This is one of the most anticipated projects we’ve undertaken since Recreating Recreation," Langlois said, per the City of Sterling Heights. The center will also include meeting spaces, locker rooms, and specialized areas like a zen room and a space for nursing mothers.
Mayor Michael C. Taylor highlighted that the development underpins the city's stride towards enhancing recreational and community engagement. "Our residents supported the Pathway to Play and Preservation millage because they recognize the importance of quality-of-life and sustainability investments," Taylor stated, as per the City of Sterling Heights, pointing out that the adaptive reuse of the existing property aligns with the city's long-term objectives outlined in the Visioning 2040 plan.
A scheduled community listening and feedback session on Sept. 30 invites residents to engage with the details of the upcoming facility and voice their input on the amenities outlined. Pending a nod from the city council, Sterling Heights could see the doors open to the new space in July 2026, fostering wellness, play, and a reinforced community connection.
