The Sterling Heights Public Library has amped up its kid-friendly offerings with a newly enhanced dramatic play area, now complete with a variety of engaging and educational props for early literacy development. This makeover is backed by a $2,000 Early Literacy Grant from the Suburban Library Cooperative and aims to foster imaginative play and language skills among young visitors.

The library's previous setup included a modest wooden stall and a smattering of reused play items. However, with the additional funds, the space has seen a complete overhaul, introducing better quality furniture and props to boost the children’s play experience. The new area boasts a kitchen set, a miniature diner, a grocery stand, and an outdoor playhouse situated within the Children's Garden. "Dramatic play is more than just fun—it is a vital tool for early literacy,” Sterling Heights Library Director Tammy Turgeon said, per the City of Sterling Heights. “Through role-playing and storytelling, children practice language skills, expand their vocabulary, and build important social connections."

To maintain the play area's appeal, the library has also acquired numerous themed dramatic play kits. These kits switch out every month, presenting children with a range of real-world scenarios to explore—ranging from professions such as a dentist, veterinarian, and doctor, to leisure activities like camping and magic tricks. Kids can also delve into culinary arts with sandwich and sushi shop kits or put their DIY skills to the test with a variety of tool kits.

The choice addition of a light table allows little ones to try their hand at X-ray discoveries and construction projects. The Sterling Heights Public Library has thus ensured the activities are inclusive, culturally relevant, and welcoming for families throughout the community. Their goal is to blend imaginative play with educational resources, launching kids on a path of lifelong learning.
