Hug Baan Thai, a family-owned restaurant in Viceroy Plaza, Sterling Heights, opened in 2023 at the former Sala Thai location. Owners Jeff and Susie have adjusted the menu to feature traditional Thai flavors, including dishes from Susie’s native Isan region. Jeff said, “One of the best compliments we get is people telling us this is the most authentic Thai food they’ve had in the area,” according to the City of Sterling Heights.
Hug Baan Thai has updated its interior as part of the owners’ focus on quality and ambiance. Susie visits local Asian markets each day to purchase fresh ingredients used in the dishes. Jeff said their use of authentic Thai ingredients has reduced takeout demand, as the restaurant is intended as a place for customers to dine in and enjoy a meal. He added, “People have told us a lot of Thai places are Americanized and appreciate us sticking to the roots,” as reported by the City of Sterling Heights.
Hug Baan Thai, located at 2751 E. 14 Mile Road, has received strong community support, but owners Jeff and Susie plan to focus on gradual growth within their current operations rather than expansion. Susie said, “‘Baan’ means ‘house’ in Thai—we want to make it comfortable, like a house. We want people to feel warm and welcome.” The restaurant is decorated with textiles and lighting and is open from noon to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with Wednesday as a closed day, as stated by the City of Sterling Heights.
