A violent incident at a Gurnee senior living facility came to a close after an hours-long standoff with a SWAT team. Maurice Freeman, 45, was arrested Saturday evening for attacking his mother with a metal pipe at Thomas Place Gurnee, located at 401 North Hunt Club Road. The victim, a 68-year-old woman, sustained a head injury from the altercation. She was subsequently transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and is expected to make a recovery, Lake and McHenry County Scanner reported.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, officers arrived on scene around 6 p.m. They tried to persuade Freeman to leave the apartment multiple times, but he refused to cooperate. Given Freeman's active warrant for failure to appear and his history of violence, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was called to assist with the situation. Residents were evacuated from the floor as a precaution, as indicated by NBC Chicago in a recent report.
During the standoff, efforts to resolve the conflict included verbal commands and even canine announcements. "Officers established a secure perimeter and worked to resolve the situation," as Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor detailed in a statement obtained by Lake and McHenry County Scanner. The NIPAS Emergency Services Team (EST) ultimately made the decision to enter the apartment and apprehend Freeman without further incident.
Once in custody, Freeman was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation. As confirmed in the NBC Chicago report, Gurnee police were in the process of preparing an arrest warrant for aggravated domestic battery on Sunday afternoon. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with further details pending. As of now, Freeman's motive for the attack remains unclear.
