
The San Jose community is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic triple homicide that occurred on Chynoweth Avenue, with local authorities recently apprehending a suspect tied to the violent outburst. According to the San José Police Department (SJPD), multiple calls reporting gunshots and a woman screaming for help were received in the early hours of September 16, leading officers to discover three victims with gunshot wounds.
The emergency calls came in at around 12:26 AM, at first, officers located an adult female victim outside the residence who, despite being rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, was later pronounced dead and two additional victims were found inside the residence, a second adult female pronounced deceased at the scene, and an adult male who, after being transported to a hospital with critical gunshot wounds, also succumbed to his injuries, these events marked the city's 19th, 20th, and 21st homicides of the year. Hoodline reported that the assailant had fled the scene before the arrival of the police, prompting an urgent manhunt.
In response to the violent episode, SJPD's Homicide Unit Detectives launched a comprehensive investigation, utilizing the Real Time Intelligence Center to identify 27-year-old San José resident Joseph Vicencio as the primary suspect. On September 17, authorities, aided by the Covert Response Unit and Special Operations MERGE Unit, arrested Vicencio, and he was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder. The SJPD stated, "Our Detectives acted swiftly, working around the clock to put this violent suspect behind bars."
While the motive and circumstances of the incident remain under close examination, San José Police Chief Paul Joseph reflected on the gravity of the situation and its impact on the community, expressing hope for healing and justice, Mayor Matt Mahan also commended the detectives' work for ensuring public safety, as said in a public statement, "I’m praying for the families of all three victims and hope that this gives them confidence that justice will be served." said San José Mayor Matt Mahan, per the San José Police Department. Additionally, City Manager Jennifer Maguire voiced her devastation over the incident and her gratitude toward the swift actions of the police. The identities of the victims will be released following the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner's procedures.
