Residents of Surreywood Apartments were abruptly plunged into disarray when a blaze, driven by deliberate intent, forced a mass evacuation. The Munford Police Department, via a social media post, detailed the events of the evening of September 13. The narrative tells of officers descending on the scene, following reports of heavy smoke. There, the discovery was made: the fire was an act of arson.
The investigation led to the identification of the suspect, Lazarick Ballard, who had absconded before the officers' arrival. After an expedited search, Ballard was found nearby, collared by law enforcement without a crescendo of conflict. Charged with Aggravated Arson, he now sits in Tipton County Jail, his presence secured against a bond set at $150,000. While Ballard awaits his day in court, his alleged actions have rippled through his erstwhile neighbors' lives, with the American Red Cross stepping in to weave a temporary safety net for those affected.
Chief Randal Baskin, in a statement obtained via the Police Department's social media, underlined the concerted effort that curtailed the potential calamity. "I want to assure our community that the swift actions of our officers and firefighters prevented this situation from becoming even more dangerous. The safety of our residents is always our top priority, and we are thankful no one was injured in this incident." The gratitude also extended to the Munford Fire Department for their role in stifling the blaze.
The recent fire left more than just physical damage. Displaced residents now rely on donated clothing, makeshift beds in evacuation shelters, and face uncertainty about their future after losing their homes. In response, the Red Cross has stepped in to provide relief and support for those affected by the blaze, offering assistance to help them cope with the sudden displacement.
