
Denver residents experienced a sharp reminder of the city's ongoing struggle with car theft and violent crime this past Wednesday. According to a social media post by the Denver Police Department, an armed carjacking that escalated into a dramatic chase and the subsequent arrest of a juvenile suspect, who is now facing serious charges.
The ordeal began on E. Thrill Place when two individuals confronted the victim as they were rearranging their vehicle in the driveway. "One of whom pointed a firearm at the victim before fleeing in the stolen SUV," the Denver Police Department described. In a blend of technology and police work, officers utilized the FLOCK camera system to locate the stolen vehicle shortly after. The chase necessitated swift follow-up, tracked the SUV through Denver streets, and resulted in the capture of the armed suspect.
Denver's Fuller Park became the scene of a desperate getaway as one suspect abandoned the vehicle during the pursuit, only to continue the flight on foot. Meanwhile, the driver continued until their own escape attempt led the SUV to crash into two parked cars. Despite attempting to evade on foot, Denver Police officers were able to apprehend the driver, who was later found to have a loaded handgun.
The apprehended suspect's weapon was recovered, and they were "positively identified by the victim," according to the Denver Police Department. The list of charges includes investigation of aggravated robbery, eluding, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. It is a grim addition to the suspect's record, as they were confirmed to already be on probation for two prior auto theft cases.
