The Georgia Department of Corrections has announced a change in leadership within its ranks - Tarmarshe Smith, the previous Assistant Director for the Southeast Region, is set to take over as Southeast Regional Director starting next Wednesday. In a press release published yesterday, GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver gave nod to Smith's promotion, after the retirement of Annettia Toby, the former Regional Director.
Smith's journey through the ranks of the GDC spans over two decades, a trajectory that saw him move from a new recruit as a Correctional Officer at Georgia SP in 2002 to the upper echelons of correctional administration; Commissioner Oliver highlighted Smith's "extensive knowledge and experience" which he said "have proven to be extremely valuable to the agency," according to the agency's website. Smith's new jurisdiction will encompass the management of 16 state prison facilities peppered across the Southeast Georgia region, factors that are setting the stage for this next chapter in state corrections.
The Commissioner's confidence stems from Smith's comprehensive service record, including roles that ranged from Canine Handler to Warden at Calhoun SP, each tenure providing him with insights that would cement his qualifications for his latest promotion. As the overseer of a large swath of the state's correctional landscape, Smith will have to bring to bear the full weight of his experience garnered from two decades of upward mobility within the GDC framework.
Smith's academic background, outfitted with a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Leadership and a Master of Public Safety Administration from Mercer University, complements his bevy of departmental training including Advanced Management Training Professional Management Program, among many others; with this backdrop, Smith's readiness to lead seems beyond questioning. His professional development is accentuated by a completion of specialized National Institute of Corrections Training and Adjunct Auditor Training, indicating his acquaintance with national standards in corrections administration and oversight.
