In a recent social media post, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office issued a stark warning against a pervasive phone scam. Swindlers, impersonating officials, are calling residents and falsely claiming they owe fines for missing a court date or jury duty. The callous scam is detailed on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page, alerting the community to these fraudulent requests for money, which often demand wire transfers.
According to the Sheriff's office, the scammers even use names of legitimate TCSO employees to bolster the credibility of their deceitful scheme. Unfortunately, having received these questionable calls, individuals are led to believe that the calls are originating from actual TCSO phone numbers. "TCSO does not call and demand money over the phone to pay for warrants, fines or missed jury duty," the Sheriff's Office clearly states, adamant to ensure that legitimate law enforcement practices are not misunderstood by these malevolent pretenses.
There's a steadfast reminder for the public, reinforcing skepticism towards any phone-based financial solicitation. "We will NEVER ask for any payment via gift cards or green dot cards, or any payment app such as Zelle or CashApp," the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office elaborates, undermining the tactics employed by these schemers who prey on unwary victims. In a bid to cash in on fear and confusion, scammers have asked their targets to make payments, sometimes to the tune of thousands, through untraceable and irreversible means.
