State investigators are digging into the details of an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Dyer County, following a high-speed pursuit late Monday night. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Newsroom, a deputy from the Dyer County Sheriff's Office initiated the traffic stop on what turned out to be a stolen vehicle, sparking the chase.
The attempted stop reportedly occurred at around 10:04 p.m., when the driver of the stolen vehicle refused to yield, weaving from Dyer County into Gibson County and then back again. After deploying stop sticks that eventually halted the vehicle, deputies approached, and the encounter quickly intensified. The reason behind the deputies' discharging their weapons, striking the individual remains under scrutiny by the TBI. The suspect has since been airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, currently in stable condition.
As the TBI agents piece together the sequence of events, they remain tight-lipped, focusing their efforts on gathering evidence and conducting interviews. Their findings will be channeled to the 29th Judicial District Attorney General Danny Goodman for his assessment and decision-making. As specified by the TBI, it is not within their purview to rule on the justification of the deputies' actions; such judgment is reserved for the DA's office.
The identities of the officers involved in the Monday night incident are not disclosed by the TBI, as this falls under the jurisdiction of the Dyer County Sheriff's Office to manage such inquiries. Updates related to the investigation will be shared on the official TBI Newsroom platform once available.
