Earlier today, a catastrophic traffic incident occurred on Interstate 55 in East St. Louis, leaving three individuals injured. As reported by FOX2now, the crash involved two personal vehicles and a semi-truck, unfolding near the Martin Luther King Bridge, and resulting in significant disruption on the southbound side of the interstate.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) has confirmed that the collision was initiated by a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, leading to a direct confrontation with an oncoming vehicle and a subsequent collision involving a third vehicle. First Alert 4's crew witnessed the scene where one car was found to be forcibly wedged beneath a semi-truck's trailer, as per their coverage accessible at First Alert 4.
The repercussions of the incident were such that all southbound lanes remained sealed off to traffic until well into the early morning hours. At 5:50 a.m., the roadway was still closed, as reported by KSDK News. The three injured parties were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, although details on which vehicles the victims were occupying at the time of the crash were not initially disclosed by the authorities.
Focused investigations are currently underway as ISP works to meticulously understand the underlying cause of the wrong-way driving incident and to also analyze contributory factors. Details regarding the condition of the hospitalized individuals have not been released; however, updates are expected as the situation develops and officials gather more information.
