Last Friday, Rebecca Dallas filed a lawsuit against Roblox and Discord in San Francisco County Superior Court following the tragic suicide of her 15-year-old son, Ethan Dallas. The complaint accuses the platforms of negligence that led to the sexual exploitation and subsequent death of the California teenager. According to NBC News, Roblox and Discord allegedly failed to implement safety measures that could have prevented this tragedy.

The suit claims that as early as the age of 9, Ethan began playing Roblox with parental controls that were eventually disabled under the guidance of an adult predator on the platform. This unknown individual, who posed as a child, gradually moved their communication to Discord, where he was able to coerce Ethan into sending explicit images. As The New York Times reports, Rebecca Dallas was unaware of the shift to Discord and the explicit conversations until Ethan's heartbreaking confession, months before his death in April 2024.

Roblox and Discord have been under increasing scrutiny as Rebecca Dallas's lawsuit is part of a larger pattern of legal actions alleging that the companies have created environments where predators can too easily exploit children. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation included both in their "Dirty Dozen" list of entities said to facilitate sexual abuse and exploitation. According to NBC News, more than 20 similar lawsuits have been filed in federal courts within the year against Roblox, suggesting a systemic problem.

While both companies have voiced their commitment to user safety, with Roblox citing rigorous built-in safety features and Discord affirming their use of technology to remove content that violates policies, Rebecca Dallas's suit argues that these platforms have not done enough to shield children from harm. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic, unimaginable loss," said a Roblox spokesman, per The New York Times.
