Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced over $42 million in grants to improve rail safety along Florida’s Brightline rail corridor. The funding will address safety concerns such as installing fencing, upgrading grade crossings, and implementing a trespassing alert system to protect the roughly three million passengers who travel the route each year.
As per the U.S. Department of Transportation, the grants include $24.9 million for the East Coast Corridor Trespassing and Intrusion Mitigation Project, $24.9 million for improvements to highway-railroad crossings across 195 miles of corridor, $1.6 million for a real-time trespassing and collision alert technology system, and $15.4 million to enhance safety at 21 grade crossings with new gates and delineators. Additionally, $150,000 will go to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to support enforcement against pedestrian trespassing.
These measures aim to reduce risks at points where rail lines intersect with pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
