Travelers heading to the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) or the Kahului Airport (OGG) can expect delays, with the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advising those with checked bags to allot extra time before their flights. Current estimates put the recommended arrival time at least 90 minutes prior to flight departure. The delays are linked to baggage screening processes at both locations.
While such delays are not uncommon in the realm of air travel, the simultaneous impact on both the Kona and Kahului airports adds a layer of stress for passengers and staff alike. According to reports from KITV, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is "monitoring both situations closely" and promises updates as they become available.
Furthermore, the state Department of Transportation's advisory for passengers has been echoed by local news outlets, stressing the importance of this early arrival suggestion. A piece published by Maui Now also reinforced this advisory earlier today, pointing out the necessity of the recommendation for "anyone traveling with checked luggage."
