As the community braces for Friday night's high school football game, Twinsburg City School District is ramping up security measures following the discovery of a handgun in a girls' restroom at Twinsburg High School stadium. According to FOX8, the weapon was found on Monday by a custodian who promptly reported the incident to the Twinsburg Police Department. The investigation is ongoing, with police yet to confirm if the firearm was loaded.
Interim Superintendent Steve Marlow communicated in a Sept. 24 email, obtained by WKYC, that the handgun was likely placed between the junior varsity game on Saturday morning and the conclusion of youth football games. With safety as a "top priority," Marlow outlined that the district's response includes an increased police presence at the stadium, alongside reinforced safety protocols surrounding the football game against the Hudson Explorers this Friday evening.
Steve Marlow, in the email to parents, stressed the importance of vigilance within the community, stating, “If you see something, say something.” The Twinsburg High School stadium will continue its policy of prohibiting backpacks and athletic bags, as per communication shared with families. Found stuffed in a sanitary dispenser while cleaning the women's restroom, the custodian's discovery prompted quick action, notifying authorities and adding to the serious tenor leading up to the game, the Cleveland19 reported.
The situation has spurred both the Twinsburg and Hudson police departments to jointly assert in letters to families that there is no immediate cause for concern. Around six to eight police officers are expected to be present at the event. "The safety of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority," according to Cleveland19 news, assured the Hudson letter. Football fans planning to attend the game should prepare for the heightened security measures and support the continued effort to maintain a secure environment for both students and attendees alike.
