Two young men from Washington, D.C., Keon Preston and Mekhi Greene, both 19, have admitted to their involvement in serious criminal activities that took place on a single day in March 2025, details of which were disclosed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Preston has pleaded guilty to charges including assault with intent to kill and carjacking, while Greene has also pleaded guilty to carjacking.

The chain of events, as laid out by prosecutors, began on March 23, when Preston, along with two other individuals who remain unidentified, fired about 30 rounds at a victim who was innocuously walking from his house to a bus stop the bullets did not hit the intended target but the house and car suffered damage, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Later that evening, the duo combined forces with these unidentified suspects again, this time to commit an armed carjacking, they wore masks and dark clothing and they took a vehicle at gunpoint in the area of East Capitol Street Northeast.

Law enforcement reacted quickly to the carjacking. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers located the stolen car and initiated a pursuit, culminating when the suspects hit a dead end and fled on foot. They were, however, apprehended by the police shortly thereafter, and officers found two illegal firearms in their possession, one of which was modified to shoot automatically.

Since the incidents, both Preston and Greene have remained in custody, and their sentencing has been slated for December this year; "Carjacking carries a mandatory minimum term of seven years of incarceration," the U.S. Attorney's Office clarified. The prosecutions are being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Green and the MPD, with Chief Pamela Smith vocally supporting the announcement.
