The US Department of Transportation has loosened the purse strings to the tune of $86 million, aiming to bolster the safety of the nation's pipelines. Secretary Sean P. Duffy revealed this substantial grant designed to support state pipeline safety initiatives, a move ensuring that the vast labyrinth of American pipelines undergoes stringent inspection and oversight.
With safety as the department's guiding principle, Duffy mentioned in a statement that these funds are earmarked to reinforce an existing collaboration with states in maintaining the safety net around communities and the energy sector at large. The funds, which are to flow through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), earmarked to oversee upwards of 85 percent of the nation's 3.3 million-mile pipeline network, according to PHMSA's announcement.
The grants for fiscal year 2025 break down into two key chunks: $82 million for Pipeline Safety State Base Grants and an additional $4 million dedicated to Underground Natural Gas Storage Grants. These grants play a critical role, allowing states to enforce federal pipeline safety regulations by reimbursing them up to 80 percent of the costs tied to personnel, equipment, and activities essential for pipeline safety inspection and enforcement.
Echoing the federal commitment to pipeline integrity, PHMSA's Acting Administrator, Ben Kochman, said, "PHMSA values its partnership with state regulators who share responsibility for overseeing the nation’s energy transportation infrastructure." Stressing the importance of the grants, Kochman added, “We remain committed to supporting them through grants, training, and other essential resources needed to accomplish their safety mission,” as noted by the official announcement. The specific amount allocated to each state can be found on the PHMSA's website's awards list.
