Overcoming financial barriers to higher education, a single mother has become the first recipient of a scholarship aimed at supporting solo caregivers at Utah State University Southwest. Whitney McKay, juggling the responsibility of raising two kids and pursuing a marketing degree, found relief through the H. Craig and Maradee S. Petersen Scholarship. "This scholarship means everything," McKay said, as obtained by USU Today. "As a single parent, I carry the full weight of providing for my family. Knowing that my educational expenses are fully covered allows me to focus on school and my children without the constant stress of financial strain."

The scholarship was established by economics professor Craig Petersen and his wife, Maradee, with the intention of easing the burden for single parents like McKay. "We are aware of how difficult it can be for single parents to return to school and complete their degrees. But, at the same time, we recognized how a college degree can open doors of success for the future," Petersen stated, as per USU Today. The Petersens' generosity stems from their understanding of the challenges faced by solo caregivers, and their belief in the transformative power of education.

McKay's goals are fueled by her desire to give back to the community. She plans to prepare for the LSAT, pursue an MBA, and eventually attend law school. McKay's ambitions also include advocating for those who lack the means to afford legal support. "I truly believe that when one person gains an education, society benefits as a whole," McKay told USU Today. Her commitment extends beyond personal success to setting an example for her sons and contributing to the broader community.

Utah State University Southwest continues to offer higher education opportunities to students across its various campuses. With a range of degree options from associate to doctorate levels, the institution aims to fuel local economies and empower individuals. As McKay puts forward, for those contemplating a return to school, the journey is fraught with hardship, yet richness awaits the persistent. "Don’t give up. When there’s a will, there’s a way," McKay advised in her interview with USU Today. "It might not be easy, but it’s possible."
