The No. 22 Utah Volleyball team has once again showcased its resilience and skill, bouncing back from an initial setback to triumph over Utah Valley on Tuesday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes now sport a 5-1 record on the season following their four-set victory (26-24, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15), as reported by UtahUtes.com.
Despite struggling early in the match and dropping the first set, the Utes made an impressive comeback by winning the next three sets consecutively. The initial lead quickly disintegrated with UVU overtaking to finish the first set ahead, yet Utah managed to claw its way back, tying the set at 20-20 before the Wolverines closed it out for a set win, 26-24. The packed schedule didn't seem to faze them, with a major clash lined up against top-ranked Nebraska on Friday, signaling the sheer tenacity of this team.
The Utes had to work hard for their wins in the following sets, with the second set notably involving two lead changes and four tied scores. Ultimately, Utah capitalized on three errors from the Wolverines and two kills from Levani Key-Powell to seal the deal at 25-22. The third set proceeded in a similar nail-biting fashion, with nine tied scores and two more lead changes, featuring a neck-to-neck score of 21-21 before the Utes could pull ahead to win it, once again with a score of 25-22.
Levani Key-Powell's impressive play continued into the fourth set, as she achieved a career-high in kills (13), attempts (27), and a season-high hitting percentage (.444), with the team defensively tightening up to set multiple career-highs in digs. The Utes' final offensive push in the match saw various players, including Key-Powell, setting career highs whilst they scored twelve consecutive points, further outlining Key-Powell's match takeover and setting the tone for the victory with a commanding final set score of 25-15.
With standout stats featuring 62 kills, three service aces, 10 blocks, and 60 digs, it was clear that this was a collective team effort. Seven Utes set new personal records, including Grace Moss and McKenna Payne, who both recorded career-highs in digs (13, 6, and 11) despite the defensive strength presented by UVU, with Leah Wilton-LaBoy contributing a season-high 12 digs. A comprehensive victory like this can be seen as a substantial morale booster as the team sets its sights on its next challenge at the Husker Invitational against No. 1 Nebraska on Sept. 12 and Drake on Sept. 13. The clash against the Huskers, particularly, is expected to be a major draw, airing at 5 p.m. MT on FS1.
