The UTEP women's volleyball team is set to conclude its non-conference games with a challenging weekend on the road. The Miners, holding an impressive 9-1 record, will first take on the formidable No. 10-ranked SMU Mustangs on Friday, followed by a match against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, a tough back-to-back schedule for the team.
A significant spotlight was on the Miners' outside hitter Torrance Lovesee in their recent outing. She surpassed the 1,000 career kills threshold, a feat achieved by only 14 other Miners in the program's history, according to UTEP Miners. The team also boasts a sixth national ranking in hitting percentage at a .324 clip, while leading Conference USA in several statistical categories.
The Miners' defense has been a key to their success with 83 total blocks this season and an impressive lead in their conference matchups. Danika Washington has been a significant presence with 34 blocks. Offensively, the team's balanced attack features four players averaging over 2.0 kills per set, demonstrating the depth and power of UTEP's roster.
UTEP's setters have also made headlines. Kalia Kohler was named CUSA Setter of the Week, her 11th career weekly award, and together with Mattie Gantt, they achieved the 2025 C-USA Co-Setter of the Week honors. Their skilled contributions have been pivotal in the team's strong start to the season. This acclaim is not new for the program; middle blocker Kaya Weaver was also heralded as the 2025 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year. Such accomplishments denote a team that's not just about a single stellar performance but rather one that's stacked with talent across the board.
Looking at their opponents, SMU carries a 6-2 record and a top-ten AVCA Coaches Poll ranking, leading their conference in hitting percentage. The Mustangs' setter Averi Carlson is a standout in assist statistics both in the ACC and nationally. Stephen F. Austin, meanwhile, comes off a solid win against Tarleton State and posted a robust record last season. UTEP and SFA have a closely contested history, with the Miners narrowly leading in recent clashes.
