A federal indictment has been issued for Cole Bradley Martin, a 39-year-old man from Vallejo, on the charge of illegally possessing firearms as a convicted felon, according to an announcement made by U.S. Attorney Eric Grant. Court documents state that Martin was found in possession of a Springfield XD 9 mm pistol and a KelTec P32 .32-caliber pistol on August 14, despite having prior felony convictions that include possessing a controlled substance and first-degree robbery in Solano County, which legally bar him from owning firearms.
The indictment is a result of a collaborative investigation between the Solano County Sheriff's Office and the FBI, leading to the charges that carry a potential maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for Martin if convicted, yet the court has the discretion to determine any sentence based on statutory factors and federal Sentencing Guidelines, which considers various variables to make Martin is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This Vallejo case falls under the umbrella of Operation Take Back America, a robust Department of Justice initiative aligning the might of various agencies to aggressively tackle illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and shield communities from violent crime. Specifically, the case is associated with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that aims to bridge law enforcement efforts at all levels with the communities they serve to mitigate violent crime and gun violence, striving to create a safer environment for everyone involved.
On May 26, 2021, the Justice Department reinforced PSN with a violent crime reduction strategy which emphasized key principles: developing trust and legitimacy within communities, buttressing community entities working to prevent violence before it occurs, focusing on strategic enforcement priorities and closely evaluating the outcomes of these initiatives, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
