Following a landmark court decision, Mayor Karen Bass is speaking out against the Trump Administration's deployment of National Guard and U.S. Marine forces on the streets of Los Angeles. The federal court has branded the deployment as illegal, a ruling that resonates with the voice of Angelenos. "Today, the federal court ruled in favor of the people of Los Angeles," Mayor Bass declared. "That was illegal. Los Angeles will not buckle and we will not break. We will not be divided and we will not be defeated," as stated by the Mayor's Office.
The ruling punctuates a long-standing confrontation between the city and the federal government, emphasizing the sanctity of the Posse Comitatus Act – a post-Civil War statute specifically designed to severely limit the military's role in domestic law enforcement. The judicial critique was unambiguous: "There were indeed protests in Los Angeles, and some individuals engaged in violence. Yet there was no rebellion, nor was civilian law enforcement unable to respond to the protests and enforce the law," as per the Mayor's Office.
In the wake of the Trump Administration's actions, which began to unroll this past summer, Mayor Bass has been a staunch defender of the city's families, particularly those at risk due to immigration policies. In July, she shed light on these concerns by announcing that Los Angeles had joined a lawsuit aimed at curtailing what many saw as overreaching federal raids on immigrant communities.
