Wake Forest is opening doors for residents to have a say in the governance of their community. Until next Tuesday, locals can submit applications to join various Town advisory boards. These boards play a crucial role by allowing community members to provide input and advise the Board of Commissioners on several town affairs. From preserving history to embracing technology, the range of boards ensures there's a conduit for virtually every interest and expertise.
Opportunity is ripe for civic-minded individuals looking to contribute to boards such as the Board of Adjustment, Historic Preservation Commission, Human Relations Council, and others. Notably, the Town is casting a wide net, inviting area high school students from grades 9 to 12 to also take part, although positions on the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment are reserved for older residents. As reported by Wake Forest's official announcement, applications can be submitted online, with alternate methods provided for those without personal computer access.
There's a catch, though – residents can only shoot their shot for one board. Incumbents aren't required to reapply, but must let their intentions be known to Deputy Town Clerk Ella Dowtin. Seats especially need filling on the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment, where those living within the Town's extraterritorial jurisdiction can bring their perspectives. Added interest and expertise in history, architecture, and related fields are particularly sought after for the Historic Preservation Commission.
Applicants will get the chance to make their case in person come October. They're encouraged to attend the monthly meeting of the advisory board they're eyeing, to introduce themselves and share their motivation for serving. After such introductions and a thorough review, recommendations for appointments will make their way to the Board of Commissioners. In a meeting set for November 18, the new appointees will be announced, as per the Town of Wake Forest's statement.
