Washington, D.C. resident Ricardo Botts, 36, was arrested on charges of the second-degree murder of his mother, as announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro yesterday. The homicide took place on September 21, 2025, and Botts faced a Superior Court hearing two days later, where he was ordered to remain in custody without bond by Magistrate Judge Heide Herrmann, according to a statement sourced from the Justice Department.
During the initial court appearance, probable cause was found to believe that Botts had indeed committed the crime. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 7, 2025. Judge Heide Herrmann found probable cause that Botts had committed the offense after an attack that claimed the life of his 66-year-old mother in the living space of their shared Southeast D.C. home.
Just moments after the stabbing, Botts fled the scene but was later apprehended in Chantilly, Virginia, by the Capital Area Regional Task Force. The victim was subjected to multiple stab wounds to the head and face, and she succumbed to her injuries within 36 hours of the assault. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith joined in the announcement of Botts' arrest.
The task of investigating this case has fallen to the Metropolitan Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Daniel Bromwich handling the prosecution. While these charges hold Botts as responsible for the vicious murder, it's essential to remember that under the law, he remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, reflecting the due process afforded to all within the legal system, reiterated in the official statement.
