Drivers planning to navigate the stretch of I-55 Southbound this weekend should be prepared for potential delays. A lane closure will be in effect from US 51 (Exit 1) to the St. Charles Parish Line (Milepost 212) on Saturday, from 6 am to 2 pm, if the weather permits. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced that this closure is necessary for sign replacement and tree trimming operations, and assures that the right lane will still be open for traffic flow.
There are no current restrictions for oversized loads, though travelers may want to consider alternate routes to avoid congestion. According to the DOTD, drivers heading south on I-55 can take the Ruddock Exit 7, proceed south on US 51 to US 61, then travel east to I-310, and go north to reconnect with I-10. Conversely, those coming from I-10 West should take I-310 South to US 61, go west to US 51, and then head north to hit I-55 according to the release.
The DOTD is asking for patience from motorists during the maintenance period and is stressing the importance of driving cautiously near construction sites. A "Safety Reminder" emphasizes the need for drivers to be aware of their surroundings, particularly concerning the presence of work crews and their equipment. The DOTD notes, "Drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment."
For updates on the closure and any potential changes in scheduling due to weather or other factors, travelers can refer to the DOTD website and adhere to posted signage in the affected area on the day of the closure. Assistance is available for navigational help and real-time traffic conditions to ease any inconvenience the construction might bring to local and through traffic.
