The West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA), a coalition that includes the Hawaiʻi Department of Health, Washington State Department of Health, California Department of Public Health, and the Oregon Health Authority, has publicly expressed concerns regarding the recent deliberations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). According to a statement issued by the alliance, the WCHA is questioning the scientific methods ACIP applied at their meeting on thursday and yesterday.

"At the September 18-19 ACIP meeting, committee members did not employ standard scientific methods to evaluate information presented to them," the statement by the Department of Health reads. It also criticized the ACIP's recent stance on the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine, along with proposed recommendations for the Hepatitis B vaccine, suggesting that these could restrict patient choice and limit access to vaccines, especially impacting children who receive immunizations through Vaccines for Children (VFC). "No new safety or efficacy data were presented to form the basis of these recommendations," the statement added, pointing to an apparent lack of data-driven justification for the ACIP's conclusions.

The WCHA's public disapproval of the ACIP's recommendations comes with a clear backing of established medical consensus. Notably, the alliance aligns with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other respected national medical organizations in affirming parental choice when it comes to opting for separate (MMR + V) or combined (MMRV) vaccines for children under four. "Restoring a process for systematically reviewing the evidence and a framework for translating the evidence into recommendations will restore scientific rigor and transparency and maintain vaccine choice for all families," the alliance proclaims in their assertion of the need for a methodical and transparent decision-making process, according to the Department of Health.

Furthermore, WCHA emphasizes the collective priority of protecting public health and pledges to ensure equitable access to vaccines. "The DOH is committed to ensuring that all individuals — regardless of background or income — have access to recommended vaccines and that healthcare providers are supported in following consistent, evidence-based immunization schedules," the statement by the Department of Health underscored. They encourage individuals to seek more information through their provider or by visiting the DOH's website. The alliance itself was recently founded with the purpose to sustain scientific expertise and science-based recommendations across Washington, California, Oregon, and Hawaiʻi, especially in light of fluctuating federal actions.
