Officials at the Yuba County Sheriff's Department are putting safety first following a concerning discovery inside the county jail. Last week, a sweep by correctional staff, along with help from Yuba County Probation and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, uncovered several homemade weapons known as "shanks." The Sheriff's Department posted about the incident, reporting that one 10-inch weapon and three other stabbing devices created by inmates were seized during the operation.
The searches, which included the deployment of K-9 units specially trained in drug and electronic detection, play a critical role in the ongoing efforts to ensure safety within the facility. According to the Sheriff's Facebook post, "These improvised weapons, often referred to as “shanks,” are extremely dangerous and can cause serious harm."
"The safety and security of our staff, inmates, and community remain our top priority," the department stated in the post. This is a clear message that such security checks will likely remain a regular fixture in an attempt to curb any further weapon manufacturing behind bars.
