Yuma County Sheriff's Office is now leading an investigation into a suspicious package that was found just outside the Yuma County Detention Center last Friday. The package, designed to resemble an explosive device, was detected at around 5:30 p.m. during a security perimeter check. Wrapped in duct tape with handwritten threats, the item was situated near an electrical box and had been staked into the ground, according to ABC15.
Following the discovery, officials from the Yuma Regional Bomb Squad were summoned to the scene to secure the area and to assess the potential threat. The bomb squad's intervention revealed that the suspicious package contained elements that are typically used in the construction of improvised explosive devices. According to the information provided by AZFamily, a controlled detonation was carried out to neutralize what was confirmed to be a credible danger.
The law enforcement authorities are treating this incident as an act of terrorism, although no arrests have been made as of yet.
