A grim scene unfolded Wednesday night in the Cayce Homes area, where an 18-year-old man was fatally shot amid an eruption of gunfire. Detectives from the Homicide and Specialized Investigations Division of metro police are piecing together the events of that night based on reports and evidence, as they follow up on multiple leads.
The violence erupted near the intersection of Sylvan and S. 6th Streets around 8:30 p.m. when two groups, one consisting of five masked individuals armed with guns, encountered each other, resulting in a shootout. The young man, whose identity is pending confirmation via fingerprint analysis, suffered a chest wound. He was pronounced dead after he arrived at Vanderbilt by ambulance, according to the Nashville Metro Police Department.
Three others were injured during the incident but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One of them, a 19-year-old, was reportedly part of the armed group and suffered a leg wound. By chance, a 23-year-old man driving in the area was hit in the arm, and a 55-year-old man, also not involved in the dispute, was hit by a bullet to the leg. The investigation is ongoing with police actively determining what spurred the violent dispute, and no arrests have been reported as of yet.
In the aftermath, three firearms, including an AR-style pistol and two handguns, were found and seized at the scene. These details add to the backdrop of ongoing concerns regarding gun violence in urban communities. The Nashville MetroPD's Specialized Investigations Division is continuing its inquiry into the motivations behind this deadly confrontation, as stated by the Nashville Metro Police Department.
