Tragedy struck early this morning on Farrington Highway in Nānākuli, as a severe car crash claimed the life of a 19-year-old pedestrian and left two others injured. KITV reports that the collision involved multiple vehicles and occurred near the intersection of Pua Ave. Speed has been identified as a potential contributing factor to the accident, although it remains to be seen if drugs or alcohol were also at play.
According to a statement obtained by KHON2, the incident unfolded when a 22-year-old woman trying to merge lanes collided with a 37-year-old male driver. The impact caused the man to lose control and strike two female pedestrians, aged 19 and 42, who were crossing the street in a crosswalk. The male driver and the older pedestrian were rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Unfortunately, the younger pedestrian passed away after being taken to the hospital in critical condition.
This marks the 71st traffic fatality this year on O‘ahu, a stark increase compared to the 38 fatalities recorded at the same point last year. The 22-year-old female driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and, as per police reports, did not sustain injuries. The Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate the specifics of the crash.
In a separate but equally alarming incident on the same highway later on the same day, a man estimated to be in his 60s was hospitalized in critical condition after a multi-vehicle collision involving a flatbed truck, as stated by KHON2. A second man, also estimated to be in his 60s, was involved in the same crash but declined hospital transport.
