A 66-year-old inmate at the Sacramento Main Jail died on Monday at a local hospital. The man, who had been in custody since September 10 for failing to register as a felony sex offender, had been hospitalized since September 24 due to a terminal illness, as reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office stated that although the death was linked to the inmate’s pre-existing condition, it will still be classified as an “in-custody death.” A full investigation is underway in accordance with department procedures and state laws while the Coroner’s Office works to notify the man’s next of kin.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page, the Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the person’s identity after completing the examination. The Sheriff’s Office will work with the Coroner’s Office during the investigation. The inmate was reported to have a terminal condition.
