Tragedy struck in Borough Park on a Wednesday evening when an 84-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a van. The incident, which also left a 54-year-old man injured, occurred around 6:30 p.m. near 18th Avenue and 49th Street. Gothamist reported that Noach Klein, the octogenarian who lost his life, was walking alongside the younger man when they were hit by the 2018 Ford Transit van, despite having the red light in their favor at the time of the crossing.
The driver, a 38-year-old man, remained at the scene following the crash and has been cooperative with authorities. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the accident. The NYPD's collision investigation squad is actively investigating the circumstances that led to the heartbreaking event. Amidst the chaos, remnants of the calamity were visible; a hat and broken glasses lay on the pavement, a grim artifact of the evening's events as described by News 12 Brooklyn.
Both victims were rushed to Maimonides Medical Center where Klein was pronounced dead, making him the fourth pedestrian fatality in the 66th precinct this year. This emerge as a slight increase when compared to the same period last year where there were just two such fatalities, as Gothamist notes. The second victim is listed in stable condition and expected to recover from his injuries.
