The educational landscape at Four Peaks Elementary School in Apache Junction is witnessing a linguistic renaissance as its dual language program flourishes. According to ABC15, the program, integrating Spanish and English, operates on a 50/50 model, dividing the day's lessons equally between the two tongues. As a pivotal part of this bilingual education journey, Regina Sanchez, who leads a first-grade class, shares with ABC15, "It's the connection I have with my kids. They really enjoy learning from my culture, and they want to learn Spanish."
Welcoming both "Welcome!" and "¡Bienvenidos!" in her classroom mirrors the inclusive spirit of the initiative. Having launched just last academic year with kindergarten students, the program is now embracing its second cohort, including first graders from the prior year. Enthusiastically building upon the blueprint, Principal Yesenia "Sunni" Braaksma, in the same ABC15 interview, articulated her vision to integrate second graders into the mix by next year, amplifying the program's scope.
Despite some early critics doubting the efficacy of teaching young minds two languages simultaneously, the program has borne fruit, contradicting the skeptics. As Ms. Sanchez notes from her firsthand experience, not only with her pupils but with her own daughter, "She can read in both languages. She can do math in both languages...it makes them more flexible, open to new things, and more creative." Testament to the program's success comes from students like Santino Judy, who not only learned vocabulary but could converse about his favorite animals in Spanish. In a vivid demonstration of their bilingual progress, Maddix Sevilla confidently counted to ten in Spanish for ABC15's Nick Ciletti.
This blossoming program is seemingly resonating with the community, with Principal Braaksma sharing with Nick from ABC15 that there are already 66 students enrolled across the dual language kindergarten and first-grade cohorts. Looking toward the future, parents are eagerly lining up their children for next academic year's dual language kindergarten, committing to an education without linguistic borders. The sister coverage by Yahoo News echoes the sentiment, signaling the growing embrace of bilingual education in the area.
As the academic year progresses, the Apache Junction community watches with bated breath, and there's anticipation to witness how the dual language program will continue to transform local education, painting a more diverse and adaptable landscape for all the young minds at Four Peaks Elementary.
