Arizona is getting serious about electric vehicles, and it looks like the state's highways will soon be more EV-friendly. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has put out a call for bids to build or upgrade a total of 34 new electric vehicle charging stations, as reported on AZDOT's website.

These stations are slated to appear along some of Arizona's busiest routes, including interstates 10 and 40, and US routes 60 and 89. This is part of the second phase of a larger plan, the first phase of which was set in motion last year with 18 stations that showed the state's commitment to green tech. The current move is aimed at bridging the gaps, easing drivers’ fears about running out of juice on the long desert highways, and making electric travel across the state hassle-free.

It's a forward-thinking initiative that lines up with the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program's drive to foster EV adoption across the nation. All these locations will feature rapid-charging stations intended to revive a typical electric vehicle in less than half an hour.

Along with ensuring an EV charging station is situated no more than 50 miles apart from the next, ADOT has also specified the necessity of accommodating different charging connectors, such as the Society of Automotive Engineers North American Charging Standard as well as the Combined Charging System plugs; these upgrades intend to cater to various electric vehicle models, and given that private entities are in charge, federal funds are contributing up to 80% of eligible project costs with the remaining balance being shouldered by these private parties.

Interested bidders have until January 16, 2026, to throw their hats in the ring according to details provided by AZDOT's announcement, with the construction of these new stations expected to kick off in 2027 and wrap up after about a year, while those approved in last year's phase are on track to begin construction before 2025 is out.
