In the face of the current, extended federal government shutdown, Arizona's State Representative Walt Blackman is making a plea to Governor Katie Hobbs and the state's Democratic Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego to act swiftly and protect their constituents from the impending crisis that will affect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as noted in a recent press release.
"With more than 400,000 Arizona families and 800,000 individuals relying on SNAP to put food on the table, Washington’s gridlock is causing real harm," Blackman said focusing on the immediate risks to food security among vulnerable groups including families, veterans, and children; he also highlighted the senators' repeated votes against a clean continuing resolution that would have averted the shutdown, Blackman asserts they possess the power to end the federal stalemate yet they choose not to act, creating heightened tension and uncertainty amongst Arizonans depending on these crucial aids, according to the Arizona House of Representatives.
Representative Blackman's call to action, particularly addressing Governor Hobbs, includes a series of robust steps that state authorities should follow—declaring a State of Emergency to mobilize state funds, coordinating with various agencies and nonprofits such as St. Mary’s Food Bank and Desert Mission Food Bank, and setting up a statewide hotline for hunger relief are some advised measures that aim at mitigating a possible crisis if federal SNAP funding grinds to a halt.
