As the chill of autumn settles in and the holiday season edges closer, the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) is gearing up to kindle a spark of joy for those in the foster care system. The DCS recently announced the return of its annual Giving Tree Program, a drive that looks to provide holiday gifts to children and young adults in foster care across Arizona. It's a straightforward opportunity for the community to make a palpable difference in the lives of these young individuals, focusing on the young ones who might otherwise go through the festive season feeling left out or forgotten.
According to the DCS website, the program especially reaches out to teenagers and young adults who aged out of foster care. They are the ones often trying to fully establish themselves as independent adults, sometimes juggling jobs, schooling, and newfound responsibilities. The Giving Tree aims to prop them up, ensuring they have something to unwrap and to remind them that their community is there behind them, ready to support.
For residents looking to take part, DCS is collaborating with local businesses, churches, and community organizations. These groups will be adorned with holiday trees bearing Giving Tree hearts - each heart detailing the name, age, gender, clothing size, and wish list of a foster child. Interested participants can select a heart, purchase the desired gift, and then drop it off to be distributed by DCS in time for the holidays, ensuring each child or young adult has a present to open and enjoy.
"The holiday season is a time of giving, and the Giving Tree Program is a perfect opportunity for our community to come together and support those who need it most," Rayetta Sanchez, a DCS Community Liaison, shared in a statement. "Each gift represents more than just a present—it’s a message of hope, love, and reassurance to a child or young adult who may be feeling forgotten during the holidays." These words, sourced from a recent DCS press release, underscore the program's mission to spread festive cheer among those who may crave it the most.
Last year's Giving Tree initiative saw over $600,000 in gifts provided for approximately 6,000 children in foster care, thanks to the support of 123 community partners. With the program’s track record of success and the evident need, it stands as a beacon of community spirit and generosity.
