The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department is set to elevate its emergency response capabilities with the introduction of Rescue 4, a custom-built heavy rescue vehicle designed for an array of technical rescue operations. In a move approved by the Mayor and Commission, the new apparatus is part of the county's strategic Apparatus Replacement Plan, aimed at augmenting public safety and emergency preparedness within the community. Fire Chief Nate Moss articulated the department’s dedication, stating, "Rescue 4 is a testament to our continued commitment to protecting the residents and visitors of Athens-Clarke County," in a statement made by the ACCFD.
Serving as a testament to the technological advancements of rescue vehicles, Rescue 4 boasts a heavy-duty Typhoon chassis and is equipped with specialized tools necessary for handling complex scenarios such as vehicle extrication, trench and confined-space endeavors, high-angle rescues, and events of structural collapse. The vehicle also houses medical supplies and firefighter-rehabilitation equipment, vital for support during extended emergencies. Captain Aaron Claas underscored the new unit’s regional significance, remarking, "This new unit enhances our ability to respond to high-risk incidents both within Athens-Clarke County and throughout the region," according to the ACCFD.
Rescue 4 will replace two older apparatus that have dutifully served the Athens-Clarke community for decades. The addition of Rescue 4 not only updates the Fire Department's capabilities but also extends their hand in support to adjacent departments through mutual-aid during large-scale incidents.
