An Atlanta police officer is in critical condition following a harrowing incident in which his patrol car crashed into a residence and caught fire. The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m., as the officer was responding to an assist call involving another officer physically engaged with a suspect, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department. Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. explained that the officer lost control, striking a house at the intersection of James P. Brawley Drive and North Avenue, which ignited a fire in both the vehicle and the home. The Atlanta Police Department has stated that the officer has been taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, as per a FOX 5 Atlanta report.
David Pitts, a resident of English Avenue, rushed to rescue the officer trapped in the flaming wreckage. "I heard a loud crash, so I came running down the street," Pitts told FOX 5 Atlanta. Finding the car door locked and the officer unresponsive, he smashed the window with a brick, opened the door from the inside, and with the help of another, dragged the officer to safety. The quick action taken by Pitts and other citizens may have been crucial to the officer's survival, as the deputy chief acknowledged their efforts in putting themselves at risk to assist.
The Atlanta Fire Department acted rapidly, containing the flames within five to eight minutes and limiting damage to the house. Remarkably, the home's sole occupant was able to exit without harm. The Georgia State Patrol will be taking charge of the subsequent investigation into the accident. Regarding the initial altercation requiring the officer's assistance, Deputy Chief Hampton confirmed to 11Alive News that the perpetrator has been detained and that the officer involved in that incident is unharmed.
Authorities, however, have not shed light on the cause behind the officer's loss of control, nor on whether his patrol car hit another object before the crash. Further details, such as the possibility of body camera or dash camera footage and whether the patrol car was using lights and sirens, remain under investigation. The identity of the injured officer is being withheld until proper notification of family members, which is expected to take place soon, as per the Atlanta Police Department's statement.
