According to the City of Bellevue's news release, Michael Shiosaki, the director of Parks & Community Services, expressed pride in the department's relentless pursuit to constantly improve upon its offerings and services. "Our evaluators noted that we take the time to get to know our customers, listen to their wants and needs and make changes based on what we hear," Shiosaki said. To thoroughly vet the department, CAPRA reviewers visited Bellevue in the spring, with a keen eye on the department's dedication to equity, public engagement, and how to effectively leverage partnerships to bolster park and trail maintenance.
Scoring centers on an evaluation framework comprising 154 rigorous standards that span various aspects of parks and recreation management, including, but not limited to, land management, facility upkeep, program innovation, safety protocols, and customer service. This accreditation is a measure of a department's overarching quality of operations, stewardship, and service to its community. National accreditation is a rigorous, multiyear process that entails an application, self-assessment, a site visit, and finally, a confirmation by CAPRA.
Further cementing its place as a leader in the field, Bellevue's Parks & Community Services Department has been CAPRA-accredited since 2005 and prides itself as the only department in the state to be reaccredited four times. This places them in an elite group of just 222 accredited agencies across the United States, a testament to their standard-setting approach to maintaining 2,700 acres of parks and open spaces, including prime locations such as Bellevue Downtown Park and the Bellevue Botanical Garden.
