Community engagement took a new swing in Blaine this weekend, with a side of friendly competition. Local residents had a chance to serve up some fun with the Blaine Police Department officers on the pickleball courts at Lexington Athletic Complex. The department hosted "Pickleball with the Police" on Sunday, encouraging citizens to join in a game that's gaining quite a racket across the country.
According to a post from the Blaine Police Department's official Facebook page, the event was scheduled from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, offering an open invitation for 'seasoned players or just the curious.' Unbeknownst to some participants, officers who spend their days running after criminals were found chasing a different kind of score on the court.
The police department framed this initiative as a chance to build community ties, stating, "This is a great chance to connect with your local officers, enjoy some laughs, and maybe even score a few points against the pros (or at least us trying to be)." The friendly match seemed a departure from traditional community policing efforts, swapping out squad cars and uniforms for paddles and a plastic ball.
Following the event, social chatter showed residents enjoyed mixing it up with Blaine's finest. Rallying alongside the officers, the community turned out to support the event, showcasing varying levels of skill on the pickleball court. Wrapped up in a whirlwind of forehands and backhands, some attendees were surprised at the officers' agility, almost as if their reflexes were sharpened by more than just responding to emergencies.
While no official winner was declared, the real triumph seemed to be in the engagement itself. "Pickleball with the Police" aimed to not only strike the ball but also strike a conversation, firmly planting the seeds of partnership between the public and the police.
