The City of Boulder is battening down the hatches against the threat of wildfires, rolling out a collaborative scheme to bolster the community's defenses. Thanks to a strategic boost from Boulder County in the shape of a Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant (SFMG), the city is ready to undertake a comprehensive three-year project to tame wildfire risks in the Wonderland Lake vicinity, as it was announced by the City of Boulder.

Starting this winter, the funding will enable a combination of tactics from cattle grazing to strategic mowing to be deployed not only on public lands but on private ones too, tying the bow on community-level wildfire mitigation. "This project represents a true cross-boundary approach that unites a full spectrum of wildfire mitigation strategies into one coordinated effort," Paul Dennison, Wildland Fire Senior Program Manager with the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks, told the City of Boulder. The goal is ambitious: to synchronize the fire-fighting efforts of city departments and local citizens to create a resilient, integrated fire shield.

By fostering cross-boundary resilience, the grant will advance the city's defense tactics, which include ridding Parks and Recreation lands of juniper trees, upgrading the landscaping of adjacent private properties, and, not to be forgotten, home hardening, key elements in the overarching combat against wildfires. The SFMG gift will bolster the city's Wildfire Ready Initiative, marrying various strategies and programs identified within the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and other related city plans aiming at enhancing wildfire resilience.
