Brickell has a new family-friendly destination as Commissioner Eileen Higgins leads the launch of the Play Spot, a recreational space designed for Miami’s busy urban district. Situated along SE 5th Street beneath the Metromover, the Play Spot provides visitors with city skyline and river views. The project transforms previously underused space into a vibrant area for play and relaxation in a neighborhood increasingly dominated by concrete and high-rises, as per the county's website.
Commissioner Higgins, who oversees District 5, has been proactive in championing the transformation of such areas into people-focused sanctuaries. Packed with fresh shade trees and modern playground equipment, this space was crafted for families to find solace amidst the urban flurry. Presenting the Play Spot as the final flourish in a trio of public space activations, the trio, encompassing the Dog Spot and the Connect Spot, are the Commissioner's endeavor to stitch together a tapestry of accessible, community-driven patches within Brickell and its neighboring Downtown.
During the groundbreaking on Monday, Higgins highlighted the importance of integrating joyous spaces in urban settings. "The Play Spot is about creating joy in the middle of our city," the Commissioner told Miami-Dade County. Her commitment reflects an understanding that as neighborhoods grow denser, the necessity for family-friendly recreational spaces escalates – a philosophy that dovetails perfectly with the Play Spot's creation.
The collaborative effort features input and resources from multiple entities: Commissioner Eileen Higgins' office, the indomitable Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Miami Downtown Development Authority, and various generous community partners. United by a vision to reimagine public spaces, the collective aims to craft areas that not only attract a cross-section of residents but also contribute vitally to the overall wellness and connectivity of the Brickell community.
