A series of assaults in the Bronx has led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man accused of attacking two women and a 15-year-old girl within a span of several hours. Jeremiah White has been taken into custody and faces charges of attempted murder and assault, according to The New York Post. The first reported incident involved 46-year-old nurse Virginia Alvarez, who was struck with a metal pipe and punched in the face on Wednesday morning. Alvarez is being treated for multiple injuries, including facial fractures and broken fingers.
Following the assault on Alvarez, Jeremiah White allegedly struck a teenage girl in the back of the head with a metal pipe, causing a concussion and injuries that required several stitches. He is also accused of punching a 54-year-old woman in the face on Franklin Avenue later the same day. These incidents occurred while White was out on supervised release after previously being charged in two separate cases involving attacks on a 17-year-old girl and a 33-year-old woman earlier in the month. Alvarez questioned why White had been released, given his prior charges, as per ABC7 New York.
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office has detailed the charges against White, who was held on $200,000 bail yesterday by Judge Deidra Moore, the same judge who had previously been compelled to release him due to New York state's bail laws. White was released about a week before the recent assaults because his earlier minor offense assault charges did not require bail. According to Bronx Assistant District Attorney Nowrang, the previous attacks involved targeting women in public and assaulting them with an object, causing fear among women in Bronx County, as reported by The New York Post.
In response to the recent series of violent incidents, officials are examining the effects of bail reform and its possible role in this case. Alvarez, who shared her experience with ABC7 New York, is among those directly affected by these events. Due to her injuries, the nurse is currently unable to work. White’s next court date is scheduled for October 20 at 10 a.m., when decisions regarding the recent charges will be made.
