A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 77 southbound near Statesville last Thursday evening, when a tractor-trailer collided with a stopped SUV, resulting in a fiery crash. According to WCNC, both vehicles were quickly engulfed in flames after a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer, operated by Aniello Marro Chavarria, failed to adequately reduce speed and rear-ended the 2012 GMC Denali SUV. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said charges are pending as they continue to consult with the Iredell County District Attorney's office.
Kimberly Taylor Cox, 60, of York, South Carolina, was a passenger in the SUV and succumbed to her injuries after being taken to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Three dogs accompanying her in the vehicle also perished in the crash. The SUV's driver, Daniel Lawrence Heisig, 40, of Charlotte, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. "Troopers said the initial investigation does not indicate impairment was a contributing factor," according to WCNC. The tragic affair caused the interstate to be shut down for about four hours to allow for investigation.
In a news release, State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Casey provided further details of the incident. Reporting by Herald Online noted that the collision happened around 8:30 p.m., when Heisig's vehicle was stopped in traffic near mile marker 49. Cox, a passenger in Heisig's vehicle, was severely injured during the crash and later died as a result of her injuries.
Aniello Marro Chavarria, the driver of the freightliner, was not injured in the incident. As the investigation unfolds, WSOCTV reported that "the initial investigation by the NC State Highway Patrol indicated that impairment was not a factor in the crash." Authorities are continuing to unravel precisely how to quickly reduce such incidents from recurring, with measures to ensure driver attentiveness and safety on the roads taking prominence in discussions.
